Joseph G. Harraka, Jr. is a partner in the firm's litigation department, where he serves as chair of its insurance coverage group.  Mr. Harraka also serves as a member of the firm's executive committee, which is responsible for managing the firm's business operations.  He received an AV Preeminent peer review rating for legal ability and ethical standards in 2000 from Martindale-Hubbell, which is the highest peer-based ranking awarded by Martindale, and has maintained that rating for over the past 15 years.  He was also selected for inclusion on the New Jersey Super Lawyers list on a number of occasions in the area of Insurance Coverage.* Super Lawyers selects attorneys using a multiphase rating process. 

 

Peer nominations and evaluations are combined with third-party research. Each candidate is evaluated on 12 indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement. Selections are made on an annual, state-by-state basis.  The Super Lawyers selection process involves three basic steps: creation of the candidate pool; evaluation of candidates by the research department; and peer evaluation by practice area.

 

During the course of his over 30 years of practice, Mr. Harraka has been involved in, and has served as lead counsel for, business litigation matters in various state, federal, and bankruptcy courts and has first chaired numerous trials for clients.  He also has argued before various state and federal appellate courts including recent arguments before the Third Circuit Court of Appeals and the New Jersey Supreme Court.  In addition, he has handled numerous arbitrations and mediation sessions and has significant experience in resolving cases without the need for trial through various alternative dispute methods.  He is also a court appointed and trained mediator. 

 

Mr. Harraka prides himself on being an aggressive advocate for his clients but never losing sight of what makes business and economic sense to them.   He takes full advantage of his MBA degree in addition to his JD degree in understanding his clients’ respective business and legal needs.

 

While he considers himself a commercial litigation attorney, Mr. Harraka has focused a significant part of  his practice over the past decade on representing CGL and health insurance companies in coverage related matters.  His insurance coverage related experience covers a broad range of issues, such as representing primary insurance companies, excess insurance companies, and third-party claim management administrators and organizations in cases involving  first-party property and third-party insurance coverage and bad faith claims in large multi-party  declaratory relief and contract-related disputes.

 

Mr. Harraka is a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association, the New York Bar Association, the State Bar of California, and the American Bar Association, and has been active in national, state, and local bar activities. Mr. Harraka frequently writes articles for a number of publications and recently has published various articles in the New Jersey Law Journal and various insurance trade industry-related journals.  He has served as a moderator and has spoken as a speaker at the ABA Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee CLE seminars and ABA Tort Trial & Insurance Practice section CLE seminars for the past several years.
